In October 2009, Cyberport held the Open Angel Forum and invited numerous speakers from Silicon Valley that were involved in the investment industry to Hong Kong to share success stories on how angel investors choose and fund creative start-ups. One of the speakers, Dave McClure (@davemcclure) answered an audience posed question thusly:

Audience member: “What can we do to build the startup community here in Hong Kong like you’ve done in the Valley?”

McClure: “Get a bunch of startups together at a coffee shop and work out a way!”

And that’s exactly what we did.

The founders of StartupsHK met every week following, usually on on a Monday, at coffee shops in Hong Kong (from Starbucks to Habitu to Cafe Corridor) developing their ideas amongst themselves and anyone who wanted to join in. It was a place where ideas were formed, business plans tested, contacts shared and most importantly a bond being formed amongst people who all were passionate about changing the world.

They decided to launch a non-profit and independent group that would band all the technology related start-ups to support each other. They called it StartUpsHK – because TechCrunch and Geeks on a Plane were taken.

They decided to start their own TechCrunch50 type event in Hong Kong and dubbed it Startup Saturday. It was a huge success and will now become an annual event.
